Ask Phillip - Meaning of 'catholic'?
What does the word 'catholic' mean? Phillip Jensen says it means 'universal' and so refers to the 'worldwide' church. He explains that Roman Catholicism identifies itself as the Church, but Jensen argues that the Bible defines the Church as a heavenly reality made up of those who are in Christ and that this reality is expressed when they gather in the name of Jesus.
