Genesis 39 - Joseph on Purity: Discipleship Masterclass - Jesmond Parish Church, Newcastle Sermon

10 Nov '19 David Holloway- How do we stay pure in our current culture? David unpacks Joseph's example to us from Genesis 39. Here Joseph upholds God's creation ordinance of sexual intercourse only within hetrosexual marriage and Joseph faces great persecution because of this. So what helped Joseph stay pure? Firstly he knew the truth about God's will for our sexual behaviour, secondly he called sinful behaviour by its real name rather than glossed over it, thirdly he realised that sining against another person is also sinning against God, and fourthly he knew that repeated temptation was no less serious and did not allow it to become normalised. Joseph's stance led to great suffering for him and could mean the same for us. However in God's providence, God brinsg good out of every situation and we must remember that forgiveness is always available at the foot of the cross: 'I do not condemn you' Jesus says in John 8:11 'Go and sin no more'.
