Mark Lanier: Overview of Greek Course 3 - Vocabulary Part 3

Summary: The vocabulary words for this lesson are dikaios, which can be translated righteousness or justification; Hagios, or Holy; and, Pistis, which is translated as faith, or belief. Many of our English words are mixed from Germanic or Latin roots. In this case righteousness is from the Germanic root meaning, “just, upright, virtuous, guiltless, sinless: conforming to the divine or moral law”. Justified is from the Latin root, ‘ius’ meaning, “right, law or justice. The words holy, hallowed, consecrate, sacred, sanctify, sanctification and saint are all from the same Greek word, Hagios.

Basic principles of Greek for laymen, to help you understand the Bible better.

Biblical Literacy is a class taught on Sunday mornings by W. Mark Lanier in Texas, US. Mark is a practicing attorney who also holds a B.A. in Biblical Languages from David Lipscomb University. He is both a committed student of Scripture and an excellent communicator of its truths. The Biblical Literacy class began in 2003 with a vision to complete an overview of the entire Bible and his since expanded to include other biblical and scholarly topics. The founding idea was to create a class that provided “core material” that would offer anyone, including a novice, a working familiarity with the Bible.
