It is full of practical advice, which does not simply take us to church but helps us to understand how we should live in the diverse worlds of work, home, politics and friendships; in Derek Kidner’s memorable phrase, it ‘puts godliness into working clothes’. The pursuit of wisdom, which is found ultimately in and through Jesus Christ, involves great effort but it is certainly worth it. Proverbs appeals to us: ‘Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding’ (4:7).
